Dental Hygiene

Here my thought about dental hygiene.

Dental caries and periodontal disease can be prevented by good dental hygiene program. A good dental hygiene program should include:

1. Good regular brushing techniques.

2. A good diet and good nutrition.

3. The use of fluoride from water and other substances containing fluoride in toothpastes and mouthwashes.

4. Regular visits to the dentist, including a thorough examination and dental prophylaxis.

All these may give oral health the best, free from dental caries and periodontal disease.

A balanced diet and limited intake of foods that contribute to dental caries are the first step to a successful dental hygiene program. Our mouth is, of course, inhabited by the formation of acid bacteria. These bacteria feed on sugars and starches. Acid is formed when bacteria act on starch or sugar. The acid formed causes degradation of the enamel, which is the starting point of any tooth decay. For this reason, it is important to minimize and, if possible, avoid foods that are rich in sugar and starch. Examples of these foods are rich filled cakes, donuts and peanut butter.
